AUA Update - September
2001
Call for Abstracts
The Scientific Advisory
Board (SAB), chaired by Jeffrey R. Balser, M.D., Ph.D., Nashville,
Tennessee, invites you to submit an original research abstract for
presentation at the AUA 49th Annual Meeting to be held April 12-14,
2002, at the Loews Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.
As was the case for the 2001 Annual Meeting, all submitted abstracts
will be accepted. However, open acceptance could result in more
abstracts than available space. Only one abstract per member (authored
or sponsored) will be accepted. SAB peer review will be used to
assign abstracts to oral, poster discussion and poster sessions.
To maintain the traditional high quality of abstract submissions,
it is essential that member authors and sponsors critically review
their submissions. If, in the opinion of the membership, this new
process results in a diminished quality of abstract, then the SAB
will return to peer-review for acceptance of abstracts. Members
are encouraged to consider submission of clinically oriented abstracts,
for there has been a decline in the numbers of such submissions
for recent meetings.
A total of 12 copies of
each abstract are needed. The copy of highest quality should be
on the top of the submissions, as this copy will be set aside for
“camera-ready” reproduction into the program booklet.
All abstract packages
must arrive at Dr. Balser’s office by 5:00 p.m. (Central Standard
Time) by Wednesday, November 21, 2001 (the day before Thanksgiving
Day). Abstract packages may not be sent as a facsimile. Abstracts
arriving after Wednesday, November 21, 2001, will be considered
late and will not be accepted. Dr. Balser’s address may be found
on the enclosed specifications for abstracts.
An abstract submission
form, which is also enclosed, is required for each abstract. The
submission form provides the SAB with information regarding authors
and membership, institutional and corporate affiliations, notification
of prior or other presentation(s) of the research, and the need
for conflict-of-interest disclaimers. A disclosure form, also enclosed,
is required for each abstract, which must be submitted should there
exist relationships of a personal or professional nature that are
relevant to the research that was conducted.
Although the exact number
may vary depending upon space availability, SAB peer-review will
be used to select 10 abstracts for oral presentation and 20 abstracts
for poster discussion format. All other abstracts will be accepted
for poster presentation. Individuals whose abstracts are selected
for oral presentation will be asked to not be overly technical in
their presentations and to provide adequate background and context
for their work. Oral presentations are not intended for post-doctoral
fellows or senior faculty.
Abstracts selected for
publication at the AUA 2002 Annual Meeting will not be published,
allowing members to submit essentially the same abstract to the
ASA 2002 Annual Meeting.
49th Annual Meeting
Members are reminded to
reserve the dates of April 12-14, 2002, and plan now to attend the
AUA 49th Annual Meeting at the Loews Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel in Nashville,
Tennessee. Charles Beattie, M.D., Ph.D., Vanderbilt University,
Local Host Chair, is arranging for an exciting social program, including
optional tours.
On Thursday evening, members
attending the annual meeting will be able to renew acquaintances
and make new ones at the highly popular welcoming reception. The
reception is a relief to those who traveled long distances and wish
to relax in a jovial atmosphere with friends.
In an effort to provide
members an opportunity to enjoy the hospitality of Nashville, Friday
evening’s social activities will feature a light cocktail reception
followed by an optional tour to a performance of the Grand Ole Opry.
Those not attending this performance may enjoy the nightlife of
Nashville on their own. Complimentary AUA shuttle buses will be
available to transport members to and from Riverfront Park, located
in the heart of Nashville’s entertainment district.
The social program concludes
on Saturday evening with a buffet reception at the newly opened
Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Members will be able to learn
about the history of country music as well as hear and see the entertainers
who have made an impact on America’s most listened to music. The
Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is rapidly becoming a “must
see” attraction in Nashville. AUA shuttle buses will be provided
to transport members to and from the museum.
Rounding out the social
events will be an optional Friday afternoon tour of Nashville that
will provide an overview of the city as well as highlight the many
famous attractions in and around the metro area. Guests will also
be able to register for an optional social tour on Saturday afternoon
to The Hermitage, the home of Andrew Jackson, seventh president
of the United States. Participants will receive a tour of the plantation
and its grounds.
